Name of show: “Compassion & Courage: Conversations in Healthcare”

Episode title and number: Mini-Series, Part 1: Avoiding Burnout

Brief summary:

While the majority of the Compassion & Courage podcast is intended for healthcare professionals, this original six part series is for everyone. These are some of the most profound tools and frameworks I’ve found for overcoming adversity and staying grounded in the moment.

For decades, we’ve known that writing and therapeutic journaling can have a profound effect on mood and perspective. Yet, unless it’s a guided exercise, most people feel too short on time to sit down and formally write. Marcus shares a quick technique you can do each day to combat compassion fatigue and burnout.

Key topics:

[1:17] “What is Narrative Medicine? We take the stories of healthcare and turn them into something from which we can learn.” – Explanation of Narrative Med and Marcus’ education in the area

[1:39] “My specific work is helping healthcare professionals, specifically nurses, utilize writing and therapeutic journaling practices to ward off compassion fatigue and burnout” – Marcus’ professional work utilizing reflective writing and therapeutic journaling

[2:18] “Some of the initial evidence…” – Real life example provided on how writing is beneficial

[3:24] “Here’s what I suggest for healthcare professionals…” – If you only write two things each day, make them these two details

[4:14] “Why do people quit work?” – Remind yourself, through journaling, of the positive impact you are making to help you stay resilient and to stay in the game
