Compassion & Courage: Conversations in Healthcare
Compassion vs. Doing Something Nice
Show Notes

Marcus begins with asking a few random questions of The Hotness…and yes, she panics and blurts out something equally random and the fun ensues. He asks what things she has done lately that are compassionate, only to unpack what is the difference between something compassionate and something nice.

The two discuss how, to receive compassion or give compassion, one must first be present to the moment. And how do we do that when we are so often plugged into our devices? Again, it goes back to intention. Specifically making effort to be in the moment and to witness what is happening around you.

Key topics:

  • [3:00] Is there a difference between compassion and simply just doing something nice for someone?
  • [8:02] It’s about focusing on what we CAN do
  • [9:09] We are at our deepest humanity when taking care of fellow human beings who are suffering
  • [13:20] The many faces of compassion
  • [13:45] Is it still compassion if you feel good doing it?
  • [14:18] If you have self-esteem issues, go volunteer with this group…
  • [15:56] The compassionate thing to do for others is often the compassionate thing that we can do for ourselves, too
